Colorful Rugs: How to Pick One and Build Around It
A rug is the biggest single purchase in a colorful room and the one people stall on longest, usually for the same reason: it is a lot of money for something that might turn out to be too much.
Most of that anxiety is about sizing and fiber, not color. Get those two right and the color question gets much easier.
Size, before anything else
The most common mistake is buying a size down. A rug that is too small makes a room look smaller and cheaper, and no amount of pattern rescues it.
| Room | What the rug has to do | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Living room, three-seat sofa and two chairs | Front legs of every seating piece on the rug | 8' x 10' |
| Living room, generous | All legs on the rug | 9' x 12' or 10' x 12' |
| Small living room or apartment | Coffee table plus front legs of the sofa | 5' x 7' or 6' x 9' |
| Queen bed | 18 inches past each side | 8' x 10' |
| King bed | 18 inches past each side | 9' x 12' |
| Hallway, galley kitchen, beside a bed | Even gap at both ends, not wall to wall | Runner |
If the right size is outside the budget, buy a runner in the pattern you love rather than a small rectangle of it. A runner has a job. A too-small area rug is just a mistake in the middle of the floor.
Wool or cotton
Hand-tufted wool has more spring, holds its pile under furniture, and takes dye with more depth. It costs more and it is what we use for Echo and the hand-knotted Zebra. It suits a living room, a dining room, anywhere with weight on it.
Cotton tufted is softer and flatter, washes more easily, and is the better choice in a kid's room, a bedroom or anywhere people sit on the floor. Bellows, Squiggle and the retro runners are cotton for that reason. Pile on our tufted rugs runs between half an inch and an inch.
Both are hand-tufted by our partners in India, which is why no two are exactly identical and why the abstracts have slight variation in where a color lands. That is the nature of the process, not a defect.
Where the Bellows pattern came from
Worth knowing if you are looking at it. Dani Klarić painted a film case for one of the Bellows Film Lab stores, in bubblegum pink, periwinkle blue and light yellow. We took that painting and scaled it into a rug, which is a harder translation than it sounds, because a pattern that reads at the size of a camera bag has to be redrawn to work across ten feet of floor.
It comes in 5' x 7', 6' x 9', 8' x 10' and 10' x 12', plus a runner and a bathmat in the same colorway.
Choosing a pattern you will not tire of
Large abstract shapes age better than small busy repeats. A small repeating motif is doing the same thing everywhere on the rug, so your eye finishes with it quickly. A large abstract keeps giving you different compositions depending on where you stand and what furniture is on it.
Mid-tone grounds hide life better than either very pale or very dark. A cream rug shows everything. A near-black rug shows lint and dust.
And check the rug against your floor, not against a white background. A warm oak floor pushes a rug warmer. Grey laminate pulls the same rug cooler and can make a soft pink read dusty.
The first six months
Nobody tells you this before you buy a hand-tufted rug and it is the thing that generates the most worried emails. A new tufted rug sheds loose fiber. It is normal, it diminishes with regular vacuuming, and it usually settles down within three to six months.
Vacuum in one direction rather than back and forth, using suction only. No beater bar and no bristles on a tufted pile. Loose threads get trimmed with scissors, never pulled.
Pads, and why yours matters more here
A tufted rug without a pad slides, wrinkles, and wears out at the wrinkle. It also feels thinner than it is. A felt and rubber pad cut two inches smaller than the rug on all sides fixes all of that and costs a fraction of the rug.
This is the least glamorous advice in the article and the one most likely to affect how long the rug lasts.
Building the room on top
Once the rug is down, pull two colors out of it and repeat them at smaller scale. A pillow, a throw, the spine of something on a shelf. Do not try to repeat all of them, which produces a room that looks like a swatch book.
Keep the largest upholstered piece plain. The rug and the sofa should not both be patterned unless you have done this before and know exactly what you are doing.
Living with it
Rotate it twice a year so the sun fades it evenly rather than in a stripe. Blot spills, do not rub, and use cold water before anything else. Spot clean with a dry cloth first and call a professional for anything that has set.
Colorful rugs are more forgiving than people expect. It is the pale ones that need a schedule.
